This cannot be merely an issue of an absolutely new beginning, however, but rather of a step forward which emerges from the debate with the tradition. We must in fact emphatically warn against the common contemporary arrogance with regard to the tradition, and especially against the wholesale rejection of the traditional thought of God. Usually the object of such criticism is nothing more than a dreadful caricature. There is very little to be learned from such criticism. Conversely, the common disparagement today of tradition should not hold us back from attempting an objective debate with the decisive thoughts of the past, in order to emerge from such a debate with new questions and perhaps with new answers.
